Roof was two feet thick

This roof was up to two feet thick in some areas!

We recently did one one BIG repair job, on a building in down town Oklahoma City. The roof is a rounded roof, with two walls on either side of the building. The drains on the roof had been clogged up and so the water was just pooling up. Of course this lead to leaks, and more leaks and worse leaks and lots of water damage.

As it seems, the answer to this problem for some repair guys, was to just keep adding more and more roofing materials, over the existing roofing materials. All this did was slow the leaks for a short time, but since the problem still existed. The leaks always came back, again and again and again.

We came in and tore out all the old roofing at the bottom of the roof and up the walls, which was nearly two feet thick in some places. Found the drains, cleaned them all out. Made sure they would do their job, then installed ISO board and TPO roofing.

Since the roof acts like a swimming pool, we basically put in a swimming pool liner.

The moral to this story?

Well, if the roof is leaking then chances are very good that adding more materials over old materials is not going to solve the problem. It may at best delay the problem, but eventually it will be back in full force.

If you have a leak, your best solution is almost always going to be tearing out the old materials and replacing the roofing. Something, like with this roof, you may want to use a different material more suited to your roofs specific situation.

Got leaks, we can fix them!

Roofing and your Chimney

One of the most neglected parts of the roofing systems we find is the chimney. Most of the time they flashed well, but very rarely will we find any kind of water diversion on the back of the chimney. This leaves the water flow right to the back of the chimney where it can puddle and eventually rust or decay the flashing. And, of course that means a leak in your home.

We had the pleasure recently of being hired to rebuild a chimney, add a diversion called a "cricket" and re flash it. I wanted to share that job with you all, and hopefully show you how we have taken extra steps to make sure this homeowner's roof last for a very long time.

In the picture you can see the same pitch we built behind the chimney frame. This will become the diversion, taking the water around the chimney, rather the letting the water run down against the back side of the chimney.

In the next photo, our roofers have installed the roofing materials. This would include a leak barriar, synthetic underlayment and matching 40 year laminated shingles.

You should also be able to see the flashing metal that our roofers installed along at the chimney. When completed this flashing will be behind the siding making it water tight. The same flashing technique is used alone the sides as well, so no water can seep in anywhere around the chimney.

Once the diversion is built, the flashing is installed and the roofing installed, the last step is to install new siding over the chimney frame, then have a our painter come in and apply a good coating.

This chimney will not be a problem anytime soon for this homeowner.

If you have a chimney you would like rebuilt, no matter who did your roof, give us a call and we will be more then happy to provide you with our inspection and free estimate.

Thanks

Why Ventilation?

Why ventilation?

Well the number one answer, that most of us can relate to is "TO SAVE MONEY!"

If you have even been in your attic, and your house is not ventilated properly. You know how hot it is can get up there, in the summer time it is simply unbearable. You will begin to sweat almost instantly, the air is hard to breath and if you are up there too long it can even cause you to feel like you are about to pass out. Be careful, you just might.

Here is is the deal.

The sun is hot, very hot! The heat from the sun is beating down on your roof every day, all day. This causes what is called "solar gain", and that means it heats up your atict space. As air is heated it will expand, that is why it seems the air is so thick up there.

Well, like any container, the space can only hold so much. So the hot air is then forced from the attic into your living space. This raises the temperature of the space you are paying hard earned money to cool off.

The first line of defence is to properly ventilate the roof, giving that hot air some other places to escape the attic, rather then into your PAID TO COOL living area ...

You can also consider radiant barriers and reflective roofing products, these are designed to reduce the "solar gain" and working with good ventilation and insulation WILL bring down your energy bill.

If you want to know more about how your roof can SAVE YOU MONEY!

It is a crime

What is insurance fraud?

As simply put as possible insurance fraud is "any misrepresentation of the cost of repairs" and any, means any. This is a very serious matter, and could result in fines and prison time for both the home owner and the contractor. Even so, people are cheating the insurance companies all over the place. It seems that the only way this will stop, is when people start getting arrested for it.

Here is are two examples I have experienced myself.

1. We completed a job for a man, and a few weeks later he calls and says "Hey, I sold my house and got $5,000 less for it then I had hoped" he asked "can you write me a new invoice and add $5,000 to it, so I can get that money from my insurance company?" I said "well that seems illegal" and the conversation was over.

Had I done that, I would have been guilty of a crime and got nothing at all for it. I could have risked my business, my family and my reputation. All so a man could put some money in his pocket, and some now I am the bad guy for not "helping"

2. More recently, after doing a walk around with a man he pulls me to the side and says "Do they come out an look" I asked "who?" he said "the insurance company, do they come out to see if the work was done" I asked "why do you ask" he said "Well I could live with out doing certain repairs, but if I had an invoice saying they where done, then I could get my depreciation."

He was asking me to write an invoice up and present it to his insurance company, telling them I had done repairs that I did not do. All so he can cheat them out of a few thousand dollars, and I get nothing.

Again, I am being asked to risk everything so someone could put a few bucks in their own pocket. Certainly, getting tossed in jail for a few years, and not being with my family, is not something I care to do. And, to add insult to injury, I would not even get paid a fair market price for the work in the first place. (he wants me to cut my price and give him the work for nearly nothing)

Look, defrauding the insurance company is a CRIME! You can be arrested and jailed for it. It is not a game, and it is not something to take lightly ... and it is shame that there are people out there who will ask someone to risk all they have, including their family, so they can pocket a few bucks.

If you are looking for a company who will help you cheat the insurance companies, and line your pockets, we are not that company. Do not even bother to call us, anyone in this company will walk away from the job in a heart beat.

On the other hand, if you want to hire a company who will be honest and will do the work proposed, exactly the way was promised and care about your home even after the bill is paid. Then we are the company for you, we play this straight and narrow, and we do not lie to, or cheat anyone ... if that is the company you are looking for, give us a call.

Let me ask you this, if a company is willing to break the law to help you cheat the insurance company ... what makes you think they wont cheat you to?

Hire local and hire an honest contractor, we are out there.
